THE GRAY HOUSE IN TARTU USED TO BE KGB JAIL

During almost half a century of the Soviet occupation, estimated 122.000 persons in Estonia fell victim for communist crimes against humanity. More than 30.000 of them lost their live. The Soviet security service NKVD/KGB had their central office for Southern Estonia in the so called Gray House in Tartu. KGB's jails were located in the basement of the Gray House, where the Tartu City Museum has an extension since October 2001. Some of the prison cells have been restored as they were during the Soviet era, others host the permanent exhibition of the KGB museum. The museum exposes the Soviet occupation of Estonia as well as resistance against the occupation.

THE WORLD ACCORDING TO LARKO GOES ALL ENGLISH

As of today, this site, The World according to Larko, is all English. Larko is cathering all his articles in Finnish to a brand new web site LARKON MAAILMA at http://koti.kontu.la/mlarkovirta. New articles will be published at the new site only. Old articles will be copied there but the archieved front pages will remain and the links to articles in Finnish will still be clickable.


When Larko is ready with installing the new web site (expected by early February 2003), a chronological index of all articles in English will be the next item in Larko's agenda as suggested by quite a few readers. By separating the two sites Larko wishes to make it more comfortable for readers in both English and Finnish. Comments by readers are as always welcome.

GORE WITHDREW FROM PRESIDENTIAL RACE

Former vice president Al GoreFormer U.S. vice president Al Gore announced that he will not run for president in the 2004 presidential election. Gore said he would not want a re-run of election 2000 where he beat president George W Bush by popular vote but was defeated by court ruling. To put it politely, that might not be the only reason why the former vice president would not want to run. Al Gore's withdrawal provides other democratic front runners a chance to step forward.
